A Note on Sringara Rasa- Donovan Roebert

Most rasikas, when speaking about sringara rasa, will strike out in the direction of the sublimation of the erotic or some such phrase. Then, when you ask them to explain what they mean, you find they hardly know, or do not know at all, because the phrase has become not much more than a convenient escape route from the threatening notion of sringara itself.

PRIYALASYA ARTICLES - VIDEO SECTION - RAAS By GEETA CHANDRAN

Smt.P.Ranganayaki (1914-2005) was dedicated to the Shri Subrahmanya svami temple in Tiruttani at the age of 17.  She was trained by her grandmother Smt.Subburatnamma (1871-1950) who wrote down her entire ritual, artistic and social repertoire in Telugu, Sanskrit and Tamil.
Between 1977-1988 Smt.P.Ranganayaki taught  this repertoire  of ritual, song and dance to Saskia Kersenboom; as a token of her acceptance of Saskia as her student-heir she handed  over this family manuscript to her.

Rich information on her life and art can be found in Saskia's dissertation 'Nityasumangali - Devadasi Tradition in South India' (PhD 1984, and published 1987, 1998, 2002, 2011, 2016, 2018). The work inspired many scholars and artists but was also heavily plagiarised and distorted in writing, performance, films and novels.

Smt.P. Rangayanakai never received an Indian national award, honour or 'Padma Bhusan' but deserves to be remembered in her own Voice. We hear her voice in this short video (2004, New York, Columbia University).

The excerpt features  Pushpanjali and Padam 'Manci dinamu' as taught by her to Saskia Kersenboom.

In this archival video from 2014, Dancer Geeta Chandran with her Natya Vriksha Dance Company perform RAAS for the National Creative Arts Festival, at the Stein Auditorium at India Habitat Centre in New Delhi.

Celebrating Krishna’s beauty and his play with the gopis of Vrindavan, this piece is an original dance composition; conceived and created for performance by Dancer Geeta Chandran as a Senior Research Fellowship Awardee from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

Performed initially as a solo performance, Dancer Geeta Chandran re-designed this piece also for group choreography. Using images from famous Raas Nritya paintings and treatises such as Harivamsha and the Bhagwat Purana, Geeta’s choreography celebrates beauty and devotion in prismatic ways.

The libretto by Hitahari Vansh is set to Raagamalika and has been sung by Smt. Sudha Raghuraman.

Soundtrack Credits: Nattuvangam: Guru S.Shankar; Vocal: Smt. Sudha Raghuraman; Mridangam: Shri Lalgudi R. Sriganesh; Flute: Shri G.Raghuraman

Dancers of Natya Vriksha Dance Company: Sneha Chakradhar, Sharanya Chandran, Divya Saluja, Rashi Bijlani, Amrithasruthi Radhakrishnan, Radhika Kathal
