PRIYALASYA - JANUARY 2018 - NEWSLETTER

We now enter a new calendar year. The Margazhi season is with us to guide into 2018 and we all are happy that the year 2017 gave us a wonderful season. Another good news that came about was that Chennai  now has got international recognition and inclusion in the form of UNESCO Creative Cities Network for its rich musical tradition.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, congratulating the city: “Chennai’s contribution to our rich culture is precious. This is a proud moment for India.” Here is the news report. A total of 64 cities from 44 countries have joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, the organisation’s website said.

The season that we are experiencing has also brought in analytical and intense debates on various issues concerning the art. Some of them were about the very traditions that helped evolve classical dance Bharatanatyam, the need to respect the origins and to recognize the contributions of Devdasi community.

We included some news that dimensions the scope of Bharatanatyam in the News-Bits section. Feel free to forward your opinions, thoughts and views.

The headgear adorned by the Odissi dancer is full of symbolism

The flowers at the back represent the kadamb flowers which are said to be a favourite of Lord Krishna, the presiding deity in Odissi. The buds on the side represent the sun rays,
While the centre piece represent the Jaganath Puri Temple tower

Review: Bending It Like Bharatanatyam By SIOBHAN BURKE - The New York Times

The Sunday Guardian-23-Sep-2017

Aptly referred to as the ‘adiguru’ of Odissi, Guru Pankaj Charan Das was the guru of all the founder-fathers of Odissi dance – Kelucharan Mohapatra, Mayadhar Raut and Debaprasad Das – apart from most of the next generation of Odissi gurus who are internationally known today. And ironically, he had been the most unsung Odissi legend.
